As I strolled various malls during the holiday season against my will and better judgment, I would see lines outside all the gaming stores as folks line up to buy Battlefield 3, NBA 2K 12, Rage, Just Dance 3, or the newly released Modern Warfare 3.

You don’t think the gaming business is big business?  Modern Warfare 3 raked in $400 million in sales upon its first week of release in late November 2011.

To get a better handle on the gaming industry, especially in light of the holiday shopping season, I had the good fortune of a Q & A with Johnathan Wendel (a.k.a Fatal1ty).  Mr. Wendel has amassed over $500,000 in career prize money, and his Fatal1ty Gaming Gear products are produced by such licensees as Creative, AsRock, and OCZ.  These products generate in the low 8 figures in retail sales each year.

RISHE: Explain the state of the videogame industry today?

WENDEL: The video game industry continues to be a huge success, everything from PC Gaming, Console Gaming and even Mobile Gaming.  Everyone wants to game on their downtime, and especially when the weather doesn’t permit you to get outside.  You have constant interaction with other people online, and there is even some great games in 3D!
As for the professional gaming circuit, you’re starting to see huge tournament payouts for team games in Call of Duty, Battlefield 3, and League of Legends.  With those three games alone they are giving out about $7 million or more in prize money.

RISHE:  Why are the combat games (known as First Person Shooter games) so popular?

WENDEL:  FPS games in general allow you to be whoever you want to be…be it a sniper, soldier, medic, etc.  The cool thing I like about FPS games is that I can do whatever I want, I feel as if I have freedom to look and move my character in the video game just like I was there in real life.  And there is nothing more satisfying than frag’n your friends online.

RISHE:  What traits / skills that you possess and have developed over the years have allowed you to be so successful as a player?

WENDEL:  I believe my hand-eye coordination from playing sports and other activities has allowed me to be a great gamer.  Since becoming a champion in gaming, the skills or traits I acquired include more reflexes as well as becoming better at memorization.  To be at the top of your game, you need to excel in all of these categories.

RISHE:  What are some current games that you would recommend for this holiday season?

WENDEL:  Battlefield 3, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 & Gears of War 3.  I know these are all FPS games, but they are the most popular right now and are the games I specialize in.

If you want to play some different games, you can always try League of Legends for FREE on your PC.  It’s a very interesting game I play along side my FPS mayhem.

The overall economy is slowly staggering back to its feet in the aftermath of what many called the Great Recession.

But there is nothing overly sluggish about the video gaming industry.

We caught up with Fatal1ty on the floor of this year’s E3 to talk about the world of professional gaming

BH: Obviously there’s some money to be made on the professional gaming circuit, but at some point you realize that you’ve got to attempt to use this ability create more income.

F: That’s why I launched a line of products. I realized that these companies were making millions of dollars off me or using me to make money. I thought, Why can’t I make money?’ They weren’t going to offer me a percentage of, say, Microsoft or Intel or whoever else, so I started my own company with my name on it. it’s totally made for gamers. So I won’t have to game for the rest of my life to make money…”

oPlaid: How hard is it for you to sit in the booth and watch this new generation of gamers take all the glory you’re accustomed to having? Do you ever think, “Man, I wish I could get in there and show these guys what it really means to be a pro gamer!”?

Fatal1ty: Ha… I know I can play, but right now I’m trying to grow the awareness of Pro Gaming to a mainstream audience to make this sport bigger! After it reaches that point and I’ve done as much as I can for gaming, I’m right back into the competition… I love competing and don’t plan to stop.

oPlaid: If the CGS suddenly decided to add Quake 4, which team would you hope drafted you and for what reasons?

Fatal1ty: Ha! I would probably go with Brian Flander’s Chicago Chimera. We’ve been friends, teammates, opponents… everything. I sponsored him for a little while and we’ve been friends for about nine years now.

But hey, he’s a champion dueler too, so if I had no one else to spar with, I could always spar with my manager ;))) sounds good to me…

As for him being manager, all he has to do is let me play my game.
